Time of establishment

World Environment Day (World Environment Day) is a festival established by the United Nations to encourage global residents to raise environmental awareness and take environmental actions. It is scheduled on June 5 every year.

The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, held in Stockholm from June 5 to 16, 1972, adopted a proposal to designate June 5 every year as "World Environment Day", which was first held in 1974.
World Environment Day, as a "human festival", calls on the public to take positive environmental protection actions.

Origin

On June 5, 1972, the United Nations held the first meeting on the human environment in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, and adopted the famous "Declaration on the Human Environment" and the "Action Plan" for protecting the global environment. and improving the environment”.
This is the first conference in human history to study and protect the human environment worldwide. The 1,300 delegates from 113 countries and regions who attended the conference suggested that the opening day of the conference be designated as "World Environment Day".
The Chinese delegation actively participated in the drafting of the above-mentioned declaration, and at the meeting put forward the Chinese government's 32-character policy on environmental protection approved by Premier Zhou Enlai: "Comprehensive planning, rational layout, comprehensive utilization, turning harm into benefit, relying on the masses , Let's do our best to protect the environment and benefit the people."

In October of the same year, the 27th United Nations General Assembly decided to establish the United Nations Environment Programme based on the recommendations of the Stockholm Conference, and designated June 5 every year as World Environment Day. Various activities to protect the environment and oppose pollution were held before and after. The United Nations Environment Programme also publishes its annual report on the state of the world's environment on this day.

In January 1973, the United Nations General Assembly established the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) according to the resolution of the Conference on the Human Environment, and established the Council for Environmental Planning (GCEP) and the Environment Fund. UNEP is a permanent agency responsible for the day-to-day affairs of the United Nations on the environment, and acts as an international center for environmental activities, promoting and coordinating environmental protection work within and outside the United Nations.
